What is COVID-19 coronavirus?
According to the WHO, Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus from the city of Wuhan in China. This is a highly contagious virus. In just 31 days this virus has infected more than a thousand people. The mortality rate is low. Many people experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring any special treatment. But for some people this virus can become seriously dangerous and can even cause deaths. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through Body fluids, droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow and using a hanky or a tissue.
How to protect ourselves from this disease?
At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments. The best way to protect ourselves is to wash our hands frequently with soap and water or to use an alcohol-based hand rub. Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing because when someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease. We should also avoid unessential travel. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick. We should eat healthy as the people with low immunity power are the most affected.
How to Determine if a person has the COVID-19 ?
According to the WHO, the most common symptoms of Covid-19 are fever, tiredness and a dry cough. Some patients may also have a runny nose, sore throat, nasal congestion and aches and pains or diarrhoea. The people with less immunity power are the most affected.
What precautions should an infected person take?
If a person shows any of the above symptoms or tests positive then they should isolate themselves and seek medical help.
What is the best prevention?
According to the WHO, to prevent infection and to slow transmission of COVID-19, do the following:
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or clean them with alcohol-based hand rub.
Maintain at least 1 metre distance between you and people coughing or sneezing.
Avoid touching your face.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Stay home if you feel unwell.
Refrain from smoking and other activities that weaken the lungs.
Practice physical distancing by avoiding unnecessary travel and staying away from large groups of people.
Is COVID-19 a biological weapon?
Some say that this virus was created in laboratories by China. However, this is totally unfounded and no one can be 100% sure of it.
When will the vaccines develop?
The vaccines are under development and it may take some time to come into effect.
