What is Memory?

Dictionaries say that the mental capacity or faculty of retaining and reviving facts, events, impressions, etc., or of recalling or recognizing previous experiences is called memory. After reading this definition, we get an idea of what it actually is. However, we still do not have any idea of how our amazing brain stores our precious memories and recalls it.

Lets find out...

How does the brain stores memory?

When a memory is created, it is stored as electrical and chemical signals in the brain. Our brain is composed of a dense network of cells called neurons that conduct nerve impulses. It is the site where memories are stored. Many people doubt that the memories are stored in the brain at an atomic level, but recent researches have proved that memories actually throughout many brain structures in the connections between neurons. Also, memories are formed by clusters in a neuron working together.

Are there different ways in which the brain stores memory?

Well, the answer is yes. There are two ways through which the brain stores memory- the short -term memory and the long-term memory. We can understand these as the RAM and ROM in a computer.

What are short-term and long-term memories?

Short-term memory is like the page number of a book, a stranger's name, etc. These memories are usually stored in pre-frontal lobes which are located in the front part of the brain. These memories are usually removed from our brain.

Long-term memories are the deeper thoughts or events which are remembered for a long time. These memories are stored in the hippocampus of the brain.

Can short-term memories be converted to long-term memories?

Yes, Short-term memories can be converted into long-term memories if an event or thought is constantly discussed or repeated.
