Hey there, Welcome to a #newpost of MJD Newsletter. Cracking our fingers or knuckles as we say it is one of the most common things we human beings have been doing since a long time. Many say it's an addiction, some say it relaxes our joints, while others say it causes Arthritis. Let's take a look into this whole theory so that we find the actual truth. We're pretty sure that you will have all your doubts cleared by the end of this post.
How the joints work?
To understand what happens when we crack our fingers or any other joints, we shall first take a look at the nature of our joints. Joints which we can easily crack without hurting ourselves are known as 'diarthrodial joints'. These are some of the most typical joints of our body.
Inside these joints is found the 'synovial fluid' which is like a lubricant. This fluid also serves nutrients for the cells that maintains the cartilage of the joints. In addition, this fluid contains the dissolved gasses like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen.
What makes the noise?
Now let's get to the point. Most of the time we crack the fingers of our hand or toe or any other joint, we get to hear a noise. The noise itself gives us an idea or lets us think that something is busted inside or in the middle of the joint. Every time we try cracking our joints, fingers or knuckles, the synovial fluid get's stretched forming bubbles and when the fluid is released, the bubble pops making a cracking sound. Once the finger is cracked, you have to wait for about 20 mins to crack it again.
Is cracking our fingers bad?
This is probably the most common question which people get when they crack their fingers. Once Donald L. Unger, a self described researcher decided to crack the fingers in one of his hands for 60 years but not the other one. And he found out that both the hands were fine and nothing happened to them. However, a research in 1990 did find that cracking our fingers all the time led to hand swelling.
(its good to always stay in the bright side, just in case :) )
Does cracking our fingers give Arthritis?
During Unger's research, he also found that his both hands were completely normal and he did not got any Arthritis, which most of the doctors agreed with. Cracking our fingers in public can be awkward and when it comes to relaxing your fingers, most of the scientists and doctors have said that it's a mental thing.
