Why is the water colourless?

Every object around us has a colour. Have you wondered why water is the only object which is transparent as well as colourless? Here's the reason why water is so unique. Keep Reading....

Although water absorbs wide ranges of invisible wavelengths, it does not absorb or interact with visible light and allows it to pass through unaltered. One of the reasons for water's transperance could be evolutionary. The eye or vertebrates evolved in the sea, and grew sensitive to those wavelengths of light that pass through sea water. Since the wavelengths we an see are those that pass through water, we perceive water as being transparent. Pure water does not significantly absorb any colour from the visible range, so it appears colourless. However, when light penetrates several metres of water, some wavelengths in red end of the visible spectrum are absorbed.
